Just a few months ago, people thought Kevin Stefanski's job as head coach of the Cleveland Browns was safe. NFL insiders said the idea of firing him was "stunning." But now, going into the 2025 season, things look very different.
After a rough 2024 season filled with quarterback problems and a weak offense, many believe Stefanski is in trouble. The Browns had the worst offense in the league last year, and their defense took a big step back too. As a result, there's growing talk that this could be Stefanski's final year with the team-unless something changes fast.
Time for Stefanski to step up
Knowing what's at stake, Stefanski has decided to take charge of the offense again. He promoted Tommy Rees to offensive coordinator but kept full control of the system. If the offense doesn't improve, Stefanski won't be able to blame anyone else.
The Browns also have a tough start to the season, facing several top teams right away. If they lose early, Stefanski could quickly lose the trust of his players-and possibly his job.

Stefanski has played a key role in making the Browns competitive again. Since becoming head coach in 2020, he's led the team to two playoff appearances and won the NFL Coach of the Year award twice. He brought structure, professionalism, and stability to a franchise that had struggled for years.
Players respect him, and he's helped build a strong culture in the locker room. But in the NFL, past success doesn't always guarantee future job security, especially after a disappointing season.
But it might not be too late for him, as someone else could be holding the key for his renewal. We are obviously talking about Shedeur Sanders.
Stefanski and The Browns rely on Sanders
Exactly. Shedeur Sanders, one of the team's rookie quarterbacks, could be the saviour to everything. If he plays well, even just showing strong potential, it might be enough to give Stefanski more time.
Sanders, who was picked late in the draft, is turning heads during practice. Stefanski says the young QBs-including Sanders and Dillon Gabriel are "doing great," and he seems calm about the competition.
Still, the quarterback room is crowded. Alongside Sanders and Gabriel, the Browns also have Deshaun Watson, Joe Flacco, and Kenny Pickett. But none of them are sure bets anymore. Watson has struggled, Flacco is aging, and Pickett is inconsistent. That leaves the door wide open for someone like Shedeur Sanders to step up and surprise everyone.
Stefanski has dealt with a lot of injuries, staff changes, and rotating quarterbacks. But this season, excuses won't matter. Former Browns player Leroy Hoard summed it up best: "it's all about what Stefanski can do with the players he has".
If Shedeur Sanders shines, he could not only change the Browns' season, but also save Stefanski's job.
