Heterochromia is a phenomenon that occurs when a person's irises are different colors. This condition is not particularly common. In fact, heterochromia can be partial, meaning that part of the iris is a different color; or complete, meaning that the entire iris of one eye is a different color. Surely, when reading about this condition, famous people such as Bowie or Nathy Peluso may have come to mind, who have made heterochromia part of their image as artists.
However, Bowie did not have this condition, but anisocoria, a condition that makes one pupil larger than the other. Nathy Peluso does show one eye of each color but this could be due to the use of colored lenses, since in older photos, the singer shows her two brown eyes. It is also likely that she may have suffered a change in color in one of her eyes for some of the reasons explained by Dr. David Callejo on his Instagram .
Heterochromia from birth
This condition, as we have mentioned, is not particularly common. However, the most common reason for having one eye of each color is heterochromia from birth.
Genetic heterochromia, according to the expert, occurs in less than 1% of cases. The color of the eyes is determined by the amount of melanin in the iris. In the case of heterochromia from birth, the melanin would have been distributed unevenly in both eyes. In this case, it is not a pathology, but a genetic condition.
Genetic conditions that cause heterochromia
As a second cause, David Callejo points to certain genetic conditions that could cause heterochromia, such as congenital Horner's syndrome, Waanderburg syndrome or Parry-Romberg syndrome.
When these conditions occur, one eye of each color is perceived and it will be from birth, although there will be a pathology that will cause this physical rarity
Conditions that can change your eye color
As a third reason why you might have one eye of each color, the doctor mentions conditions that you may have throughout your life.
Some examples of these conditions include glaucoma, an eye disease characterized by increased intraocular pressure, hardness of the eyeball, atrophy of the optic papilla and blindness; uveitis, which is an inflammation of the eye; or trauma
