The Dallas Cowboys could revolutionize their defense with the Green Bay Packers' castoff

The Dallas Cowboys could have an unexpected opportunity to transform their secondary following a high-profile decision from the Green Bay Packers to part ways with their two-time Pro Bowl cornerback, Jaire Alexander.

A well-respected and valuable player, within moments, speculation surrounding his next destination exploded particularly in Dallas, where fans and analysts quickly began lobbying for a potential g.

The 27-year-old was a 2018 first-round pick with a reputation as a skilled, aggressive cover corner and he has made 287 tackles, 12 interceptions, 70 deflections and a defensive touchdown, earning him his Pro Bowl honors.

Why have the Packers got rid?

Alexander's main weakness is not his footballing talent, it's keeping healthy and that's why Green Bay's Lambeau Field executives have made the decision to let him go.

"In his seven seasons with the Packers," said Brian Gutekunst, general manager. "Jaire established himself as one of the premier players in the NFL at one of the game's most challenging positions.

"His contributions to our organization were felt on the field, in the locker room and in our community, and he will be missed. We appreciate all he gave and we wish him all the best moving forward."

Despite his undeniable talent, Alexander has missed extended time in three of the past four seasons due to injuries and according to Packers Wire, front office has grown increasingly wary of continuing to pay the $84 million extension they gave him just a year ago in 2024.

The cap hits of $25 million in 2025 and $27 million in 2026 are substantial and the financial commitment remained daunting to Green Bay, who made the call to free up the funds rather than take a risk on reliability.

Is Alexander worth the risk for the Cowboys?

Dallas find themselves in a precarious situation at cornerback with Trevon Diggs missing most of the 2023 season and suffering another major injury in 2024, meaning the secondary has been left thin.

Additionally, Diggs may miss half of the season, leaving DaRon Bland as the most reliable figure currently in the rotation. Behind him? Unproven depth. So this context makes a potential g of Jaire Alexander.

He offers proven ability and experience at a key position for the Cowboys, particularly in a division that now features elite receiving threats from the Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Commanders.

However, jumping at the chance could prove premature and the team has been tentative of g new coneerbacks in recent years such as the Miami Dolphins' Jalen Ramsey, who also shares All-Pro honors.

While Alexander may be a former Pro Bowler, his injury history closely mirrors that of Diggs. g one injury-prone star to replace another may not provide the long-term stability Dallas seeks - especially under new head coach Brian Schottenheimer.
