The Cleveland Browns find themselves at a familiar crossroads this offseason, grappling with a quarterback situation that has already ignited fervent speculation among fans and analysts.
Despite having only two Organized Team Activities (OTAs) under their belt, the conversation around who will lead the offense this fall is in full swing.
This year, the debate is further fueled by the presence of two intriguing rookies, Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel, both possessing raw, untapped potential.
Haslam's impulsive past
Among the many voices weighing in on Cleveland's quarterback puzzle, Fox Sports' Colin Cowherd recently offered a particularly pointed perspective. Cowherd suggested that Shedeur Sanders' inherent flashiness, big name, and significant marketability could very well tip the scales in his favor, even over more seasoned options.
He directly linked this potential outcome to Browns owner Jimmy Haslam's history of impulsive decision-making.
"The owner of the Browns, Jimmy Haslam, is really impulsive," Cowherd stated on Monday. He recalled Haslam's past choices, including drafting Johnny Manziel over more conventional quarterbacks, selecting Baker Mayfield, and g Deshaun Watson to what he termed "the league's worst contract" despite serious personal allegations.
Cowherd argued that in a quarterback room lacking any established star power outside of Sanders, the rookie is poised to get a significant opportunity.
"There's a lot of belief in the NFL that Jimmy Haslam is the reason that Cleveland finally drafted Shedeur Sanders. He is desperate to be recognized and for star power," he added.
Cowherd further emphasized the Browns' challenging early-season schedule, featuring matchups against formidable opponents like the Bengals, Ravens, Packers, Lions, Vikings, and Steelers.
He drew a sharp contrast between what he described as "old Joe Flacco, dull Kenny Pickett and small Dillon Gabriel" and the star power of opposing quarterbacks such as Lamar Jackson, Jordan Love, and Joe Burrow. This disparity, Cowherd believes, underscores Cleveland's perceived lack of offensive excitement without a dynamic presence under center.
"My prediction, you start looking at that schedule between Weeks 7 and 10, Shedeur Sanders is gonna get a shot here," Cowherd asserted.
"Shedeur's on this roster because Jimmy Haslam wanted him on the roster. Haslam is starving for a star quarterback. He doesn't have the Ravens' roster, he doesn't have Burrow, he doesn't have the Steelers' brand. It's a weak roster. They're an injury or two away from having the weakest wide receiver room in the league. This is a team that is going to be boring offensively. You know what will make them not boring? Shedeur Sanders taking snaps, win or lose."
